2017 Golden Globes, Coverage

The critically acclaimed film just won its first prize — and it just so happened to be the biggest category of the night.

Director Barry Jenkins lavished praise on independent studio A24 for distributing the film, and also thanked his mom. He urged one simple message for everyone that has seen or talked about the movie: “Tell a friend, tell a friend, tell a friend.”

Casey Affleck wins best actor in a drama for ‘Manchester by the Sea’

The actor, who got rave reviews for his performance in “Manchester by the Sea,” was the clear front-runner in this category, which included “Fences” actor-director Denzel Washington. This marks his first win, after one previous nomination.

In the film, which received five nominations in total, Affleck plays a man trying to help his nephew navigate a recent tragedy. In a twist, Matt Damon was originally slated for the role, but couldn’t take it due to scheduling conflicts. Damon, a producer on the film, said in an earlier red carpet interview that Affleck (the younger brother of his longtime friend and collaborator, Ben Affleck) was the only replacement he considered.

“I suspect you won’t be passing on any movies in the future, when I might be nearby,” Affleck told Damon, thanking him for his “support” and “friendship.”

‘La La Land’ wins best comedy/musical

2017 Golden Globes, Coverage

…to the surprise of no one. That’s seven trophies for “La La Land,” which means the musical has the most wins of any film in Golden Globes history.

On stage, the producers thanked everyone behind the film for “ignoring and dismissing all conventional wisdom” that an original musical set in Los Angeles would be a tough sell for an audience. Looks like it turned out okay!

Matt Damon still thinks it’s funny that ‘The Martian’ was considered a comedy

While presenting best actress in a comedy/musical, Matt Damon chuckled to himself that “The Martian” won this category last year.

Emma Stone wins best actress in a film comedy or musical

2017 Golden Globes, Coverage

This is the sixth win for “La La Land.”

No huge surprise here. Stone was seen as the front-runner for a role that had her singing, dancing, and making audiences laugh and cry.

“This is a film for dreamers,” she said, “and I think hope and creativity are two of the most important things in the world and that’s what this film is about.”
